    Description

    Ulisse Aldrovandi (1522-1605)

Solea Gesneri – Sole – Meriantura – Sjötunga

Original 17th-century Ulisse Aldrovandi fish print of the Sole.

Uncoloured woodcut by the Italian scientist Ulisse Aldrovandi. This plate originates from Aldrovandi’s work “De Piscibus libri V”, published in Bologna in 1638. Woodcuts are characterized by thick lines and an austere style. Aldrovandi created compelling illustrations of simple beauty, where black-and-white lines produce a high contrast. The aesthetic of these 400-year-old prints is surprisingly modern.

The fish is positioned vertically on the print, with Aldrovandi’s name and the species name in Latin are engraved above. Some ink from the text on the reverse side is ghosting through – a common characteristic of prints from this era.

    • Condition: Good condition. Some ghosting. Mounted in passepartout.
    • Dimensions: 33 x 22 cm

    Suomeksi:

Meriantura. Ulisse Aldrovandin 1600-luvun kalakuva. Värittämätön puupiirros teoksesta ”De Piscibus libri”, joka julkaistiin Bolognassa vuonna 1638. Aldrovandin puupiirros on tieteellinen kuvaus kalasta. Puupiirrokselle tyypillisesti kuvan ääriviivat ovat mustat ja paksut, kuvitus on tyyliltään yksinkertainen, jopa moderni. Kääntöpuolella oleva teksti näkyy jonkinverran läpi, kuten usein tämän aikakauden kuvissa.

    • Kunto: Hyvä kunto. Teksti näkyy jonkinverran läpi. Pahvikehyksissä.
    • Mitat: 33 x 22 cm

    • Skick: Gott antikvariskt skick. Monterad i passepartout.
    • Mått: 33 x 22 cm
