    The Laughing Audience

     

    Late 18th century copperplate engraving by William Hogarth.

     

    The etching portrays a theater audience. In the picture the commoners are enjoying the comic drama in the pit and above them is a private box for the upper classes. The etching was first created as a subscription ticket to Hogarth’s large engraving, Southwark Fair and to his series, A Rake’s Progress

     

    Condition of this plate is good. Wide margins. No tears or stains.

     

    Plate dimensions: 22,5 x 28 cm, sheet dimensions: 25,5 x 33,5 cm.
