William Hogarth: The fellow Prentices at their Looms (Industry and Idleness)
Plate 1 – The fellow Prentices at their Looms – from Industry and Idleness
Late 18th century copperplate engraving by William Hogarth.
Industry and Idleness was a set of 12 engravings demonstrating the careers of two fictional apprentices: Francis Goodchild and Tom Idle. In the series their careers are compared and contrasted. Most of Hogarths engravings were first painted and only then converted into engravings but Industry and Idleness was originally created as a set of engravings.
