Rare Deluxe Edition — Hand-Coloured Print

An original, hand-coloured bird print of a Eurasian oystercatcher, originally drawn by Magnus von Wright.

This plate originates from the hand-coloured deluxe edition of the Von Wright brothers’ best-known work, Svenska fåglar “Swedish Birds”. Printed on Dutch heavy paper; watermarks visible when held up to the light.  This specific deluxe printing was strictly limited to only 60 copies, making it very rare.

The 1920s edition is the second edition of the “Svenska fåglar”, and it expanded on the original 1828–1838 edition. While the first edition contained 184 prints, in this second edition the aim was to showcase every bird species living in Sweden, expanding the final collection to 355 species. To complete this definitive edition, the publisher received permission from the Finnish National Library to access and replicate original works by Magnus and Wilhelm von Wright, alongside their third brother, Ferdinand von Wright. The remaining missing species were completed by Swedish artist Bror Hallberg, working carefully in the signature Von Wright style.

This print is signed on the plate, allowing the original artist’s hand to be clearly authenticated and traced.

Magnus von Wright (1805–1868), Wilhelm von Wright (1810–1887), and Ferdinand von Wright (1822–1906) were three Finnish-Swedish artists and ornithologists. They were born in Kuopio, but spent significant periods of their careers and lives in Sweden. The brothers became well known for their talent in illustrating the natural world with scientific precision. They skillfully used different techniques, including pencil drawings, watercolours, lithography, and oils. While best known for their ornithological works, they also beautifully documented Nordic fish, butterflies, mammals, and landscapes.
