Raymond Chandler was an American-British novelist and screenwriter. He was the founder of hard-boiled detective fiction, with its cynical, antiheroic protagonists. The protagonist in Chandler’s novels, Philip Marlowe, was played in films by American cultural icon Humphrey Bogart. Playback was Chandler’s last finished novel; he died the following year of the release. Playback is the only novel of his to never been adapted to film.
