    Original 16th century hand-coloured woodblock engraving (xylography) by Pietro Andrea Mattioli. Name of the plant and description of the plant and it’s use is engraved in Latin above the picture.

     

    The engraving is framed in a passepartout and is in good condition. Bright colours. Sheet dimensions 34 x 23 cm.

     

    This early botanical woodcut is from the Latin edition of Mattioli’s book on medical botany Commentarii in sex libros Pedacii Dioscoridis Anazarbei de materia medica published in Venice 1565 by Vincenzo Valgrisi. The work contained over 900 woodcuts of medical plants and herbs, animals and distillation.

     

    Mattioli (Matthioli or Matthiolus) was an Italian doctor and botanist who was born in Siena, brought up in Venice and lived most of his life in Prague as a physician to the Grand Dukes. His herbal Commentarii in Sex Libros Pedacii Dioscoridis was published first in Italian, then Latin and other languages.
