ELZEVIRE PRESS. HESIOD, Elzevirian edition of the Greek poet Hesiod who lived around 700 BC. It includes his most notable works followed by a greek latin lexicon of terms occurring in Hesiod’s works by Cornelius Schrevel (1608-1664). Opera et Dies (Works and days) lays out the five Ages of Man, as well as containing advices prescribing a life of honest labour, condemning the practice of usury and attacking idleness and unjust judges, like those who decided in favour of Perses. It describes immortals beings who roam the earth watching over justice and injustice. The poem regards labor as the source of all good, in that both gods and men hate the idle. Theogonia (Deorum Generatio) concerns the origins of the world (cosmogony) and of the gods beginning with Gaia, Nyx and Eros. Embedded in Greek myth there remain fragments of quite variant tales, hinting at the rich variety of myth that once existed, city by city; but Hesiod’s retelling of the old stories became, according to the fifth century historian Herodotus, the accepted version that linked all Hellenes. The work also include Scutum Herculis a short poem of incert origin but traditionally attributed to Hesiod ( The Shield of Heracles ) because written in his style.
A nice elzevirian edition, printed in beautiful Greek characters and humanist italic and tondo typeface. Title page in double colour red and black with woodcut printer’s device, head and tail pieces in text with a few woodcut decorated initials. Contemporary binding in full stiff vellum with handwritten title on spine.
