Goos was one of the best known maritime booksellers and publishers in Amsterdam, renowned for the aesthetic quality of his atlases. This plate was engraved by Gerard Coeck and it based on the earlier work of Hendrick Doncker, with Goos adding a few details

Pieter Goos (1616 – 1675) was one of the best-known booksellers in the 17th century Amsterdam. In addition to his work as a mapmaker, he was also a skilled copper-engraver, printseller and publisher. Goos published pilots and sea-atlases which held high aesthetic standards and became popular because of it. It is often noted that many of Goos’ works were intended primarily for the book-lovers and only secondarily for practical use at sea.
