Frontispiece, (12), 536 ; (12), 516 pp. German Edition. Two works by the same author bound together about the Art of Living and behave properly for young noblemen and members of royalty (first part) and virtuos models to speak politely (the second work).
An attractive volume bound in French baroque style in elaborately decorated full calf, with double fillet framing on both covers, four raised bands at spine and beautiful early XVII century gilt tooled decorations ‘a fleuron’ and gilt lettered titles at spine, all edges painted in red, slightly worn. Two separate title pages for each part, woodcut head and tail pieces and some decorated initials in text, printed in Gothic typeface. Allegoric copper engraved frontispiece at the beginning of first part depicting a woman seated on a sphere, with a double faced head gazing through a mirror on one side and facing, on the other, a couple of intertwined snakes held in her hand. A wormhole affecting the first ten pages included the engraved frontispiece close to the inner margin, usual moderate foxing and browning due to age and kind of paper, for the rest a good neat copy with clean interiors in an attractive eye catching binding. A nice copy in beautiful French style binding.
Jean-Baptiste Morvan de Bellegarde (Nantes, 30 August 1648 – 26 April 1734), abbé de Bellegarde, was a French Jesuit who later in his life joined the monastic order of Francis de Sales. The present copy is a German translation of Bellegarde’s works originally printed in French language with the respective tittles Les Règles de la vie civile, avec des traits d’histoire pour former l’esprit d’un jeune prince (1693) and Modèles de conversations pour les personnes polies (1697).
