Raymond Chandler was an American-British novelist and screenwriter. He was the founder of hard-boiled detective fiction, with its cynical, antiheroic protagonists. The protagonist in Chandler’s novels, Philip Marlowe, was played in films by American cultural icon Humphrey Bogart. The Long Goodbye is Chandler’s most personal novel; he wrote it when his wife was dying.
