Raymond Chandler was an American-British novelist and screenwriter. He was the founder of hard-boiled detective fiction, with its cynical, antiheroic protagonists. The protagonist in Chandler’s novels, Philip Marlowe, was played in films by American cultural icon Humphrey Bogart. In this grim novel, a missing daughter and gold coin lead to topics such as murder, blackmail and the worst kind of human exploitation.
