Captain Thomas Brown Original 19th-Century Hand-Coloured Shell Engraving

An authentic 19th-century shell print by Captain Thomas Brown. A hand-coloured engraving with a beautiful, natural palette with rich earthy tones.

In good antique condition. There is light spotting (foxing) and some toning on the verso (reverse side), which does not affect the front illustration too much.

    Sheet dimensions: 31 x 25 cm

Captain Thomas Brown (1785 – 1862) was a Scottish naturalist and illustrator. Following a military career, he dedicated himself to natural history, with a particular focus on conchology. These shell and fossil engravings are from the first edition of ‘Illustrations of the Fossil Conchology of Great Britain and Ireland’ published in 1849.
