An original orchid illustration by Henry Moon from Frederick Sander’s Reichenbachia.
An authentic, large folio-sized chromolithographic print from the Frederick Sander’s monumental botanical work Reichenbachia: Orchids Illustrated and Described, published between 1888 and 1894. The plates were based on Henry Moon’s original water colours and they feature a soft colour palette on a greyish background. Name of the plant is engraved in Latin at the foot of the image.
Sander’s ambition was to create the most truthful representation of orchids ever published. To capture the vibrant hues of the exotic species, a complex chromolithographic technique was employed, layering multiple colours on top of each other. To achieve perfection, many plates were finished by hand.

Henry Moons originalillustration av orkidé från Frederick Sanders Reichenbachia. Ett kromolitografiskt tryck i stort folioformat. Planschen visar orkidén i naturlig storlek med mycket hög detaljrikedom. För att nå ett perfekt resultat användes en tryckteknik där många färglager lades ovanpå varandra, och vissa blad färdigställdes även för hand.

Frederick Sander was a German botanist and publisher best known for his celebrated work, Reichenbachia – Orchids Illustrated and Described, published between 1888 and 1894. Reichenbachia included 192 chromolithographic plates, some finished by hand. The book was Sander’s answer to growing popularity of Orchids and the increasing demand for information respecting them. According to Sander the intention was to illustrate all classes of the Orchid family and represent truthfully the natural aspects of the plants which will be drawn in life size.
