An impressive 17^th century Dutch sea chart of the Baltic Sea by Joannes Janssonius. Published in Amsterdam in 1657. A copperplate engraving with beautiful hand-colouring. A fine example of the high-quality maritime cartography of the Dutch Golden Age.

The map depicts the entire Baltic Sea, from the island of Rügen to Vyborg in the Eastern Gulf of Finland. Many coastal cities, navigational landmarks, and islands are detailed along the shores. The Åland islands are integrated into the Finnish archipelago. The verso features Latin text providing historical and geographical information about the Baltic Sea.

The map is richly decorated in the classic Dutch maritime style, with two decorative title cartouches, compass roses, sailing vessels and a net of loxodromes.

Good overall condition with fine colouring. The centrefold has been reinforced a few centimetres.

Näyttävä 1600-luvun hollantilainen Itämeren merikortti. Tekijänä Joannes Janssonius. Painettu Amsterdamissa vuonna 1657. Käsinväritetty kuparipiirros. Karttakuvassa koko Itämeri aina Rügenin saarelta Viipuriin. Ahvenanmaa piirretty Turun saaristoon. Kartta koristeltu klassisin hollantilaisin elementein: kaksi koristeellista kartushia, kompassiruusuja, laivoja sekä loksodromit. Kääntöpuolen teksti latinaksi. Hyväkuntoinen kartta, jossa kauniisti säilynyt väritys. Keskitaitetta vahvistettu kääntöpuolelta.

Ett 1600-tals holländska sjökort över Östersjön av Joannes Janssonius, tryckt i Amsterdam 1657. Handkolorerat kopparstick. Kartan sträcker sig från ön Rügen i söder till Viborg i öster. Åland är utritat som en del av Åbo skärgård. Rikt detaljerad karta med två eleganta titelkartuscher, vindrosor och segelfartyg. Baksidan har latinskt text med historisk information om Östersjön. Gott skick med fina färger. Mittvecket har förstärkts några centimeter.

Joannes Janssonius (1588 – 1664), was a Dutch cartographer, publisher and bookseller. He was the son of Johannes Janssonius the elder, and husband to Elisabeth Hondius, the daughter of the mapmaker Jocodus Hondius. Janssonius published multiple atlases, single maps, books and globes. He reissued several Hondius atlases. Despite living in Amsterdam, he was always surnamed ”from Arnhem”as his father.
