    Original 18th-Century Botanical Engraving – Monoecia Monandria Zanichellia [Zannichellia palustris – Horned pondweed – Pikkuhaura]

     

    An authentic, large folio-size copper engraving from the monumental English edition of John Miller’s botanical study, An Illustration of the Sexual System of Linnaeus. This hand-coloured engraving was painted, engraved, and published by John Miller in Dorset Court (1770–1777). The botanical name is engraved in Latin on the sheet.

     

    This plate has three pieces of adhesive tape on the right edge, slightly touching the plate mark. The sheet has a light crease in the lower right corner. Otherwise in good antique condition, with bright, well-preserved hand-colouring and generous margins. Printed on high-quality 18th-century paper.

    John Miller (1715–1792), was a distinguished German-born illustrator and botanist active in London. He worked with Philip Miller of Chelsea Physic Garden. John Miller’s work was highly praised by Carl Linnaeus himself as “more beautiful and accurate than any since the beginning of the world.”
