    Paul before Felix

     

    Late 18th century copperplate engraving by William Hogarth.

     

    The picture depicts a burlesque version of the biblical scene of St Paul declaiming before the Roman procurator of Judea, Marcus Antonius Felix. The text ‘Design’d and Etch’d in the ridiculous manner of Rembrandt’, was Hogarth’s response to Rembrandt’s etchings, which were in vogue in England at the time.

     

    Condition of this plate is good. Some foxing. Wide margins. No tears or stains.

     

    Plate dimensions: 22 x 26,5 cm, sheet dimensions: 25,5 x 33,5 cm.
